Stirling patřil mezi tři čtyřmotorové těžké bombardéry, které RAF užívala ve svých službách v období druhé světové války. Kvůli tomu, že stirlingy byly vybaveny křídly, které měly rozpětí menší než 30,5 m byla omezena jejich obratnost ve vyšších výškách. První sterling vzlétl na jaře 1939 a vybavena jím byla jako první 7. Peruť RAF již roku 1940. Stirlingy patřily k bombardérům, které mohly nést velmi velkou bombardovací zátěž (asi 6350 kg) a popřípadě, pokud bylo potřeba, mohl ve své pumovnici unést 907 kg min. Ke konci války byl tento typ vybaven také naváděcími radary H2S.Stirlingy byly využity na bombardování mnoha cílů i důležitých měst, jako byl například Berlín, Emden, Hamburg, Milán nebo Turín. Velmi důležitou roli sehrály tyto stroje při invazi v Den D, útoku na Arnhem a při překročení Rýna. Kvůli jeho rezervám ve výkonnosti a bombardovací kapacitě (v pumovnici nemohl nést bombu těžší než 907 kg) začal být stirling počátkem roku 1943 postupně stahován z aktivní služby u bombardovacího letectva a svou poslední misi uskutečnil v roce 1944. Ačkoliv se už nevyužíval jako bombardér, v armádě sloužil stále a to hlavně jako přepravní letouny, tahače pro kluzáky a později i jako civilní letadla v Belgii. Celkový počet vyrobených stirlingů byl něco kolem 2383 kusů.
